The Robotino Gyroscope CruizCore Sensor Accessory is a great challenge for mobile systems to move to predefined positions in the working space. The difficulty lies in determining the current position. The odometry provides a standard method for calculating the current position relative to the start position. The motor encoder can be used to count the number of motor revolutions and then calculate the distance travelled using the wheel diameter. Locally, this method provides very precise results. However, errors become larger as the distance increases.

Robotino Gyroscope CruizCore Sensor Accessory

Every little deviation in orientation causes a large error for a long distance. For example, if you run the process in a square with sides of one metre, you will see that Robotino does not return to the starting point.

Gyroscopes measure angular velocities based on the conservation of angular momentum. If you try to turn a rotating object about an axis other than the one about which it is rotating, this creates a torque against the movement which ensures that the total angular momentum remains the same.

The forces created by this torque are measured at the suspension point of the gyroscope. Since mechanical gyroscopes are too large, heavy and susceptible. The CruizCore XG1000 is a digital gyroscope in a handy housing unit with an integrated USB interface. It can measure angular velocities of up to ±100 º/s with a precision of <0.1 º/s. It has a maximum drift of 10 º/h.

This gyroscope can be easily integrated into the Robotino control system. The odometry functional module in Robotino view automatically values the gyroscope error correction data and almost completely eliminates orientation errors in the odometry.
